Diesel ads for the Spring line...Be stupid? You decide.

My first thought when I saw this collection of Diesel's new ads for the spring was "Wow those must have been fun to shoot."

Then I started to think about the line between art and the art of selling a product.  I mean, this campaign might be a little too interesting.  I realized when I was finished looking through all of them,  I never even noticed the clothes. I was too busy enjoying the ads.

Just me?  I mean, now that I've mentioned it you'll probably pay more attention to what they're wearing.

Anyhow, I really just wanted to show you the ads and see what you thought of them.  I didn't mean to get all philosophical on your ass.

Here's another for your viewing pleasure. Does Diesel sell helmets?

This is pretty interesting on a few levels. I looked at more of the shots and the video on the Diesel site that sums up the point of view. They are expressing the "happy accident" that most artists allow for, but they are moving it to a philosophy. Nothing good comes from planning. If you're safe, you'll miss all the good stuff.

But. What they are really doing, ad-wise, is feeding the need to rebel of their target customers, say kids 14-25ish. Buying jeans for $200 is basically stupid especially in the current economy. But hey, stupid is smart! So, if you really want to be the one who is having all the fun and shaking up the status quo, buy these stupid jeans!

PS- Part of the brilliance of the ad is all the commentary it's apt to stir up.

You're so right. After all, any PR is good PR right? " It's one of those ads that will easily sear into the minds of people who are brand conscious and the people who get upset about it are simply going to cause a bigger stir, therefore making it more attractive. Right?

I'd totally buy Diesel if I could afford even a t-shirt. I think I'll stick with admiring the campaign and shopping at the thrift store. I guess I'm too smart for this shit.

It's all about Brand too I think. Doesn't matter what clothes they are wearing as long as we get the brand. We have to want the brand.

Have you seen the FCUK branding a few years ago here? No one really took any notice of any clothes (I can't even remember if there were any clothes at all) because every one was so shocked it ALMOST said fuck! lmao it was hysterical and so manipulated! Thing is, the branding (which they still use now) totally puts me off. But I'm not the target market anyway I guess.

Oh yeah, I definitely remember those ads. They were everywhere. I actually remember thinking it would have been bolder if they had just spelled it out. FCUK is such an obvious attempt at being "bold" that it kinda put me off.

Of course, I'm also probably not their target.

You're dead on about the branding though. I didn't even think of that, silly me. I definitely remember that they're Diesel ads. I also know when I see Diesel, I see "can't afford."

Heh, yeah, me too!

I'm sick of hearing branding in. Branding, branding branding.

Yet I know I need some kind of brand for myself.

ARGH! lol
