Finding an artist like Elene Usdin reminds me that it's a great thing to be multifaceted and we don't always have to concentrate on that one avenue of our work.  Expanding and trying it all can produce some seriously fantastic work.  See for yourself:

Okay, I might be a little biased because this amazing gal has one of my drawings for a tattoo on her back...but you can't deny she's an incredible photographer/artist.

Of course, I'm a terrible inter-friend because I didn't know until this week that she had an Etsy shop!  You have to go look, her shots are so gorgeous and romantic, wistful and fantastical. She's really mastered the art of adding textures and post-processing without over doing it.  Everything PhotoZoo puts in her shots just adds more to the stories she's telling.

I could seriously gush about this gal and her work all day.  Instead, just head over and take a gander.

Minneapolis, MN 2004

You simply have to see Brian Ulrich's incredible photo project documenting the "consumer-dominated culture in which we live."  I found the amazing shot above in the Retail section of the Copia project.  He also takes a look into thrift shops and back rooms.

To think we pass by this stuff ever day.

Photographer Ian J. Whitmore takes a close look at how people's televisions are set up.  What's interesting is how much it appears to say about a person.

Mine would tell you that we like video games, never dust and my creativity stops short of designing a room.

So what does your TV say about you?

"We're All Gonna Die"
"We're All Gonna Die"
100 meters of existence by Simon Hoegsberg

You've gotta see this fantastic project for yourself.  Photographer Simon Hoegsberg strung together shots he took over the course of 20 days on a railroad bridge in Warschauer Strasse in Berlin.  The results are fantastic and only a few of the passers by appeared to even notice the camera. The entire image measures 100 meters long.

Oh, and if you have the time, check out the rest of his site.  He's a wonderful portrait photographer.

Coney Island
"Coney Island"
Property of Larry Nicosia

It was obvious to me that I should feature a photographer for this week's Etsy Wednesday, you know...in celebration of my new toy, but once I start to look through other people's photography, I just can't stop.  Hence the late-in-the-day post.

When I finally came across Larry Nicosia's Etsy Shop, it was love at first sight.

The first shot that drew me to Larry's shop was "Sandstorm on the Beach", another minimal yet provocative piece like the one above.  However, it's very important when I feature an Etsy artist that the entire shop be something I want to promote, so I scanned through most of the photos.

There isn't one single shot that I wouldn't mind having in my home.   Some more so than others of course, but they're all beautiful.

It's the same way I feel about any visual art. I want it to be beautiful and make a statement but even more importantly, I want to tell my own story.  So in the end, I usually find myself lingering on the more minimal pieces.  Like this amazing print you see above.

You know by the title that it's Coney Island, one of the loudest, brightest places in Brooklyn, NY.  What's unique about this shot is the sense of calm I get at first glance and then a little excitement creeps in when I think about what was going on over there in the park.

The only issue I have is that I want it as a giant print.  Y'know, one of those pieces that's 5 feet long and covers a wall.  This gorgeous 6.5x16.5" print will do just fine however, and it's only $29.  For that price you could easily purchase another one of his prints and pair them up.

Oh, and as an extra added bonus, this weeks artist is from my current hometown of Brooklyn and he's very new to Etsy. So why don't you head over, check out his stuff and even drop him a line to let him know you like it, even if you can't buy your own print today.

Day 139/365 [Year 2] (by thp365)
artwork property of my most excellent cousin Todd

It occurred to me today that I haven't yet highlighted one of my favorite new artists who just so happens to be my cousin Todd.  He is a photographer, computer geek, parkour-er, carpenter and much, much more.  His work astounds me every day and his ability to start a project and finish it just plain makes me jealous.

He's currently working on his second round of a 365 project and part of that are these amazing "short-writings" where he combines his words and photography to create what you see above.  You can see this one and a ton more like it here.

I'm so proud of him and his work.  He's profoud without being cheesy.  He's silly without being awkward.  Best of all, he's open.  Wide open, as every good artist (IMO) should be.  He might make you uncomfortable at times, but you realize it's simply because you can relate.

Be sure to check out his blog "Life Without a Lens Cap" and flickr and then ask yourself, if you were to put together your own short-writing, what would it be?
