Laser cutters are expensive. Like really expensive. Like $30,000+ expensive. So what if you could build your own at a fraction of the cost?
That's what Lasersaur is trying to accomplish with the help of some KickStarter funds. They think they can make a totally open source and repeatable laser cutter for under $5,000 and a budget version for under 3k.
Any maker of any kind (artists, architects, DIYers, designers, etc) can benefit from having a laser cutter. It allows you to create and reproduce things (ie robot parts, designs, bike parts, etc) over and over with... well with laser precision.
So, with the help of your funds they can get crackin' on the first prototype. The best part if you do help out? You get to be a tester.
You call also pick up some schwag for your pledges, exclusive access to design documents, behind the scenes photos and documentation and way more.
Please to be checking this week's KickStarter out. Even if you don't need a laser cutter, there are LOADS of people who will benefit from this. It's a fantastic creative cause.

You want to be happy right? Well that's PlayLab's goal with all of their projects including "Peep Show."
This week's Kick Starter is art after my heart. With the goal of making people smile how could you not get behind it?
Peep Show is a large metal sculpture set in a vacant store front windows in Norfolk, VA. (You can view them until July 1). The sculpture is made up of 12 pyramid shapes with holes to look inside and see something you "normally wouldn't see." What's inside isn't revealed so I guess if you're in the area, you'll just have to go see for yourself (and let me know!).
As you can imagine, putting up Peep Show wasn't cheap and they need a little cash to keep their projects moving. Hence the Kick Starter project.
If you give a little cash you get a little something in return as usual. Head over and pledge as little as $1 or as much as $2,000 to help them reach their $1,200 goal and then some.
You don't have to take my word for it though. Go to the project page and view the video. How can you not love these guys?

This Kick Starter, The Apology Line, is a surprising and incredibly moving art project.
Before I tell you more, I have to insist you go to the page and start the 10 minute video of recorded apologies. Some are hysterical, some unremorseful ...many of them goosebump worthy; particularly one woman emotionally apologizing to a Reverend.
The Apology Line, created by William Bridges and James Lee, was launched in the UK as an experiment. They spread the word with posters, fliers, and advertisements inviting people to call a number and leave an anonymous apology. The response was astounding with hundreds of calls each week
The Kick Starter funds will go towards bringing the line to America and eventually create a touring art show from it. Now that's something I want to hear.
The goal is lofty at $10,000, but totally doable with your help. Pledge $50 and receive a CD full of apologies from both the UK and US. $100 or more and you get yourself that same CD plus a special exclusive invite to the opening of the Apology Line exhibition. Kinda of hard to pass that up.
Here's an example apology in case you haven't started listening to that video yet:

It's simple. Every week I dive into my feed reader (that I used to neglect) and pick a bunch of awesome out of my arts & design folder. All you have to do is sit back and enjoy.

There is so much going on in the arts in Brooklyn. I love living in such a creative borough of NYC. It's really inspiring. So this week I pay homage to my home "town" with some of awesome Brooklyn Etsy sellers. Enjoy!
Tshirts, Bags, Knitwear, etc
by: Cubist Literature
As the tag line says, "All we got are really cool clothes!" It's true, I love the tshirts here. If I had the dough, I'd have one of each... with a matching bag... and button.
Celebrity Inspired Baked Goods
by: Bakerazzi
Sorry for those of you outside of NYC because they currently only cater to our area, but how could I not feature such a fabulous shop? I'd like a dozen Colin Farrells please!
Recycled Sail Pillows, Bags, Purses and more
by: Reiter8
I'm not really into sailing personally, but I'm totally into these recycled sails. They've thought of everything here, even unique luggage tags made of, you guessed it... sails!
Brooches, Bracelets, Bookmarks and more
by: Tilly Bloom
I've always kind of wondered why brooches haven't made an accessory comeback. Maybe it's because we were waiting for someone like this to come along?
Unique Lamps
by: Re-Surface
What's Brooklyn without its graffiti? These lamps are seriously way cool. They come in all sorts of shapes and sizes... and they're not all graffiti. A must see.

OK, I've been quiet long enough. Still working on the redesign but if I don't get some blogging time in, the guilt will overwhelm me. I hate that I missed last week's dip into the arts folder of my feed reader so we're gonna have some inspiration today. What day needs inspiration more than Monday anyhow?

- 3D is in. It's like, so in. However, I was really surprised to find this chunk of images on Inspire Yourself, stereoscopic images to be exact, because I was completely unaware of this technique until now. You bet your ass I can't wait to try my hand at it. via: 72dpi

I love geeks. I'm a geek. I grew up with geeks. I work with geeks. And I love the Geekery section in Etsy. FYI, I'm not talking the carnival kind (though I wish I knew a few)). I'm talkin' "a peculiar or otherwise odd person, especially one who is perceived to
be overly obsessed with one or more things including those of
intellectuality, electronics, etc"
Though I'm starting to think we can take out the 'peculiar' and 'odd' part of that as geeks quickly become a majority these days.
But hey, you certainly don't have to be a geek to enjoy these Etsy finds:
Macbook Decals ($4.99-$12.99)
by Lil Decal Shoppe
I don't have a Mac, I'm a PC. But I did put an apple sticker over the Gateway on my laptop for giggles. And how perfect is this play on the painting Son of Man (Mac) Magritte?
NES and Super NES Hard Drives ($109-$169)
by 8-Bit Memory
Dude... this is brilliant, is it not? And so many games to choose from! External drives are available in 320, 500 and 640GB sizes. There's also thumb drives and clocks and awesome.
Oxidation T-Shirt ($15)
by Ikyoto
These hilariously geeky shirts are screen printed with images found in a vintage Japanese science textbook. You can get Oxidation (seen here), Evaporation and pH Equation.
Microscope Necklace ($24)
by jl67
Ok listen, I'm not a scientist nor do I ever pretend to even have a clue about science... but I really want this mini microscope. How cute is that? It will go nicely with the camera pendant I don't have yet, don't you think?
Knit Dissections ($125-$150)
by The Crafty Hedgehog
I know what you're thinking. "WTF?!," right? But how could I see these amazing knit dissections and not show them off? I mean, who comes up with this geekery anyhow? Amazing.

3,615 pounds. Three thousand, six hundred fifteen pounds. That's how much textile waste is created by New Yorkers every 5 minutes, and that's where sculptor Derrick Melander steps in.
Melander takes our tired, old, stained and faded clothing and turns it into art creating yet another way to recycle. He separates by color (and sometimes gender), folds to exact dimensions and layers the clothing so it stacks perfectly.
However, he's not just tossing it all together. There's a bit of an emotional process involved as well, as with all art.
From his statement:

From his statement:
"When I come across a dress with a hand-sewn repair, or a coat with a name written inside the collar, the work starts to feel like a collective portrait."Back in September, Derrick created a 3,615 pound sculpture (so you can see just how much we waste in a 5 minute period) resulting in a 5x7' cube. It was done in one day with the help of the Office of Recycling Outreach and Education and was part of the 5th annual Green Brooklyn... Green City Fair. Check out the video to see more and then consider what you're doing to help cut down on textile waste, eh?

"I would like to apologize to my daughter who is twenty-seven now. For the fact that I always resented having a daughter. I wanted a son. And I wasn't a very nice mother to her. I told her I'm sorry. Things in her childhood... I have never told her the real reason because I think it would hurt her too much. I just want to say sorry. I don't want her to know it was me, I think that would be too painful for her. I love her very much. Thank you."

What did I say when I saw this set? "Whoa." That's what I said. Laz Marquez has created this extraordinary set of re-imagined Hitchcock posters. I tease you with my favorite (because "The Birds" terrifies me still...in a good way) and insist you go look at the rest of his poster work.

Hey creative Michiganders! Did you know there's a campaign to save your state that needs a poster design? Well now you do, so you're welcome.
The Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) and Let's Save Michigan have issued an open call to artists, illustrators, and graphic designers for original posters to inspire Michiganders to revive their state.
The poster should inspire people to take action and do what's necessary to revive Michigan. The campaign is looking for something "forward-looking, inspirational" and it has to include the phrase "Let's Save Michigan."
The contest is open until February 15, 2010 and you can submit your ideas here. The winner will recieve $1,000 (runner up gets $250) plus the winners will have their work displayed during a special reception in the spring!

If my world was perfect, I would spend just as much time making these DIY projects as I do staring at them on the internets. But it's not perfect and what really happens is I pour over them for what seems like hours saying "ooo I wanna make that one" and next thing I know, the day is over.
So I leave it up to you to conquer my dreams and create! Now you don't have to spend hours searching because I'm gonna make you a handy dandy list of fun DIYprojects I found throughout the week:

Hidden Jewelry Box via Design Sponge

Super easy Heart Garland via How About Orange

Yarn Wrapped Frame via Centsational Girl
(She has you build a frame but I imagine you can do the same on a dollar store find too!)

Simple Weaved Pendant from EvaForeva

Do you know about Kick Starter? Honestly, I thought I had already posted about this place awhile back but I guess it fell in one of those dusty places in my brain and I forgot. Surprise!
So it's actually a really important and incredible site for creative minds and willing donors. Kick Starter offers a place for people to post their projects and ideas that need a little funding. Whether it be a little backup cash for bills while they finally finish that photography series or funding to help out a creative meeting space. There are loads of unique projects you can help.
Plus, there's added incentive (other than helping out a creative mind in need) for all you folks interested in lending a helping hand. Each project has a little something nice to give depending on how much you pledge. (i.e. a photographer sends you a print with a pledge of 25 bucks or more). So you walk away with more than just that fuzzy feeling.
There is a catch though! If the project doesn't meet it's financial goal by a certain date, then it gets no funding at all. So if you see something you believe in, don't hesitate...give!
To make up for not mentioning this place sooner, and just because I love the cause, I'll be adding a Kick Starter of the week here on Arts and Dafts starting tomorrow!

It's always a treat when I can not only showcase some art I truly love, but give props to a local NYC gal. I had the pleasure of meeting this fantastic artist on Indie Junction and absolutely had to share her work.
You really do need to see the rest of her shop. What I've featured here just scratches the surface. There's a fantastic sense of humor to her work that will really make them a unique piece for your home.
The prints, on acid free paper with long lasting Viviera ink, are all reproductions of her hand drawn and digitally colored illustrations. There's a signature on the back of each one as well. The greeting cards are done with the same care on high quality, heavyweight stock with blank insides.
So why not go support an artist today and snag yourself a print? Hmmm?
