I know what you're thinking, "Just what I need, another social network."  Well you really do need to check this one out.  BetweenCreation is brand new (just a couple days old), invites are currently open and the interface is perfectly simple.

Between Creation Profile

So why would you join yet another social network?  Because it simply is what it is.  A place for artists of every medium to upload, share and comment on other people's work.  That's it. It's not the next Facebook (though one could dream!) and it's not full of so many whistles and bells that you get lost on the purpose, viewing art.

From the site:

At BetweenCreation we aim to:

  • 1. Help artists develop their career by letting them publish and sell their artwork
  • 2. Connect artists and increase possibilities of them working together
  • 3. Promote artists / galleries, by giving them space to post the latest events
  • 4. Assist art lovers to find interesting artists and fascinating events to attend, in their city or the rest of the world.

There's still a few things missing, like a place to put all of your links on your profile (though I just put mine in the About section).  There's currently no way to private message other members yet and there aren't any forums, which I'm actually OK with for now. That leaves more time to do what you're there to do.  However, there are plans to add more features in the future.

Uploading is really simple. You can make separate albums, upload up to 20 images at a time and easily title, describe and tag each piece.  When you do, your work shows up on the homepage wall, your profile and the "Newest Artwork" section at the bottom of every page.  So no one is going to miss out on your stuff.

So sign up for your invite (or send me a message with your email and I'll send you one) and get crackin'!  And don't forget to follow the BetweenCreation Twitter for featured art and latest news!

artists who blog

Artist Stephanie Levy runs a wonderful blog called Artists Who Blog where she interviews artists...who blog. Each artist answers these 10 questions:

  • Why did you decide to start a blog?
  • How did you come up with the name of your blog?
  • How has blogging affected your work as an artist/designer?
  • What are your favorite artist/designer blogs and why?
  • Do you any advice for artists/designers who are starting a blog?
  • What has been the most positive and inspirational aspect of having a blog for you?
  • What do you find the most difficult/most rewarding part of having a creative profession?
  • Other than your blog, what has been the most effective way for you to promote your art/design?
  • How do you maintain a healthy work/life balance?
  • What would you like to accomplish by the end of 2010?
I looove to read interviews like this.  They're inspiring, helpful, interesting and most of all they remind you you're not alone and that we're all different.  There's no set way to go about things.  No exact science to becoming a successful artist and/or blogger.  Just work hard and love what you do.

Artist blogs.

I just wanted to get another one in there.... Blog.

Indie Junction

Hey artists, have you heard?  There's a new social network in town just for you!  It's Indie Junction and it's fantastic.  Just a few days old too and getting a big response already.

On top of that, the two ladies, Nicky Vee and Deb Hall, who run the joint are really wonderful.  I had the pleasure of chatting it up with them for a bit and I'm really impressed.  With the power of their business and art minds combined, this place is destined for success.

Plus, who doesn't love a site owner who's readily available to talk to you?

Who is this site good for? Well anyone really.  However it's particularly great for artisans, newbie and veteran alike, to show off their wares and promote their businesses.  It's also promising to be a great place to start collaborations and learn a few new tricks.

Hey photogs, we're welcome too!

Oh, and yes it's free to sign up.  So there's really no point in dilly dallying.  And while you're at it, visit my profile and friend me!

Exciting news!  There's a new site (just went "live" today) for writers, artists and photographers to submit their work for a feature!

It's called Indie Ink and I am super proud and honored to say one of my photos is the first feature shot!  The first piece of writing is really wonderful too so check that out as well.

This is a prime example of why the internet is such a wonderful place for artists of any medium.  10 years ago I probably never would have met Stacy (owner of Indie Ink and her blog Jurgen Nation), but now with just a couple clicks I've met another lover of the arts and had the opportunity to share my photographs with more people.

So, check out the about page over at Indie Ink and get started on your submissions.  It's super easy, just head over to the Submit page and voila! Piece o' cake. Also, for you artists/photographers, you can join the Flickr group and submit your work that way as well.  (Just be sure to follow the guidelines to make life easier for Stacy).

Stacy and I Flickr mailed back and forth a couple times and I have to tell you, she's absolutely wonderful.  So don't be afraid to send in your work because she's nothing but encouraging.

What are you waitin' for?

Wow wow wow wow wow!  This is an incredible collaboration between Lucy McRae and Bart Hess, two artists that "share a fascination with genetic manipulation and beauty expression."

You really have to head over to the LucyandBart blog where you can see the rest of their work.  Also check out their home page, it's just awesome.

"Dialogue" from Design for Mankind is definitely becoming my favorite part of Monday.  It's really comforting to hear the perspective of other artists/bloggers/crazy people just like me on topics that genuinely interest me.

If you're reading this, then chances are you'll be interested in this week's topic: blogs!  Listen to Kate Bingaman, Craig Atkinson, Kelly Lynn Jones and of course the super host Erin Loechner's take on blogging, how they influence us and when to "ignore your Google Reader."

So what's your take and how has blogging influenced you?  As usual, feel free to comment here but definitely take a second to head join the conversation over on Design for Mankind.

This weeks "Dialogue" from Design for Mankind (my new favorite thing) deals with criticism.

Find out how artist's Craig Atkinson, Will Bryant and Jen Gotch deal with criticism and it's many forms.  And remember, this applies to everyone, not just the artistic types.  So enjoy!

So how do you deal? Feel free to share here, but also take a trip over to Design for Mankind and join the conversation.

Instant Grant Program from Steve Lambert on Vimeo.

The Federation of Students and Nominally or Unemployed Artists (or the FSNUA) came up with this brilliant idea and I'm just bummed I wasn't in the park to take advantage.

The FSNUA aims to re-inspire creative thinking and action in everyday people by removing a small barrier and providing encouragement. We give small, unsecured grants in the form of $10-$60 for creative projects thought up on the spot by everyday people. In the past this has included a merchant marine, two 10 year old girls, a US soldier on leave from Iraq, an accordion player from Alaska, and around 40 others. We funded their new paintings, drawings, knitting, and photojournalism projects, and the repair of one accordion. Projects that may not have happened had they not come across 10 people in the park to support and inspire the thought.

Beyond the small amount of money, the project encourages people to see themselves as something other than workers or consumers even if it just for the length of time required to apply for the FSNUA grant. We also hope to re-inspire dormant desires to create while presenting an example of generosity without an ulterior motive.
