How many times have you wanted to take a class, but you couldn't afford it? Trade School based in NYC has found a solution and wants to continue doing so, with your help.
At Trade School, students actually barter for their classes while specialists teach for basic items. Some classes were taught for pairs of shoes, food, mixed CDs, etc. Classes taught ranged from scrabble strategy to grant writing. Apparently there was even a ghost hunting class!
The first run of Trade School saw over 800 participants and 76 classes. The response was so outstanding that, naturally, they want to do it again. Lucky for me since I missed it the first time!
There's only one little problem, not everything can be taken care of with barter. They need some non salvageable materials and want to be able to pay someone to coordinate the classes, schedule and maintenance of the space.
Their goal? $9,000 by June 27. Pledge $15 and get a credit in the "Funders" section of their website with a personal link. $100 or more and get a unique recipe from chef and trade school teacher Athena Kokoronis. $5,000 and you get a dinner party with the same chef. And of course the doozie. $10,000 and they'll be your personal creative consultants for 3 years. (There's loads of other pledge options too. As low as $1, so head on over!)
Honestly, I don't think I should have to say very much about this. The idea of trading knowledge for goods is a brilliant one. I, and so many people I know, simply can't afford to take classes (and I've been desperate for a photography lighting class by the way) and Trade School makes it possible for us to get our learn on.

This week's Kick Starter is just too unique (and a little bizarre) to pass up.
After seeing a billboard with a famous artist collaborating with a famous clothing brand, Cate White came up with this really incredible idea: buying ad space on a panhandler's sign. (See the video on the Kick Starter page to hear more about how the idea came to life).
She will pay these pandhandlers whatever they request, as long as she can afford it, to slap a sticker on their signs displaying her website. It's a win/win situation with the homeless getting a little money in their pocket and Cate driving traffic to her website: CateWhite.com.
So the dough you pledge is going towards the website (designer fees), the stickers, the "advertising" budget and a little extra to give those who appear in her videos food/cigarettes, etc.
White is asking for a modest $2000 to complete her project. What do you get in return for your bucks? $5 gets you behind the scenes videos of panhandlers discussing the project, blog entries and your name on the donor list. $70 gets you the above, a URL on the donor list, a copy of her zine, a postcard of Cate's art and a surprise piece of her artwork. There's way more, so please go check it out.
With only 13 days left to go as I write this and 85% funded so far, she's only got a little ways to go. So pass up that dollar menu today and send it Cate's way. It's a pretty damn amazing cause.

This Kick Starter aims to answer a question in my own mind: What exactly is the current state of music and the music industry?
Tom Williams (writer), Sarah Mulligan (photographer) and Rahawa Haile (filmmaker) are gearing up for a "Gonzo" road trip across the country to seek out answers. They plan to to talk to bands (small and large), record store clerks, venue owners, label managers and of course, the fans.
So why now? Why try to understand the music industry in 2010? As they note on their Kick Starter page, every decade has been defined by a genre, but after the decline of the major music industry in the '00s (labels collapsing) and the underground scene becoming a little less underground (internet!), the possibilities for the next decade are truly endless.
Your pledges will help them publish a book they intend on writing after their trip to NYC, Richmond, Chapel Hill, Athens (GA), New Orleans, Austin (SXSW Fest), Monterrey (Mexico) and Nashville. Plus a little towards food, gas and other amenities along the way.
All they ask is $1400 to cover the cost and they're nearly there, but there's only 16 days left to pledge. And as always, if you give a little, you get a little. Give $5 and get a postcard from the road, give $15 and receive a signed paperback copy of the book and for $1000 they'll personally drive to your house to interview you for the book!
Of course, there are loads of other options so head over to the Kick Starter page and see for yourself!

The Fifth Plague of Egypt by J.M.W. Turner from IMA
This has got to be one of the coolest Superbowl bets in the history of Superbowl bets.
Two art museum directors, Maxwell L. Anderson of Indianapolis Museum of Art (IMA) and E. John Bullard of New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA), started a betting war online as a response to art blogger (Modern Art Notes) Tyler Green's tweet:
Bullard countered with a Renoir saying: "Max Anderson must not really believe the Colts can beat the Saints in the Super Bowl. Let's up the ante. The New Orleans Museum of Art will bet the three-month loan of its Renoir painting, Seamstress at Window, circa 1908, which is currently in the big Renoir exhibition in Paris. What will Max wager of equal importance? Go Saints!"
It goes on an on. You can catch a full run down on Modern Art Notes.
In the end the bet was sealed with "The Fifth Plague of Egypt" by J.M.W. Turner from IMA (pictured above) and "Ideal View of Tivoli" by Claude Lorrain from NOMA (pictured below).
Best of luck to both museums and congratulations on getting the arts involved in the Superbowl. In my eyes, it's a win/win!

For the last, oh I don't know... 3 years? Maybe more? I've pretty much been a sort of shut in. I'm responsible, I work all day on my photography, try desperately to catch up with my writing, go to my day job, watch tv at night and basically don't do much of anything else.
Then about 2 weeks ago, it felt like the summer weather flipped that random switch that never turned anything on and suddenly there's a light glowing out on the porch. I've been a little irresponsible, stayed out too late a handful of times and generally been up to "no good."
Why it's not good to have this much fun, I'll never know.
It could be a phase. It could also be a major life change. Either way, I haven't been this content and happily exhausted in a long time. I tell myself it's okay to slack off a little because I'm searching for some crazy inspiration.
Of course, that other side of my brain is starting to nag. I have to start mixing the priorities in with the tom foolery. A healthy balance is needed or I'm going to torment myself into misery.
So, fellow artists, creators, writers and no-goodniks, how do you do it? How do you force yourself to sit down and create when you've got the itch to go out and play? And as artists, should we even resist that urge or is it actually more productive to get out and do it, making room for new inspiration?
And what's the meaning of life anyway?

You know how it is. You'll just be walking down the street and catch a glimpse of something in a window and think "Oooh, I gotta have that." You don't really need it, but the window made it look so... necessary.
Same goes for Etsy, but in this case it's all about the photos. Some sellers are so good at presenting their wares that even though you don't need it, you want it. Here's a few finds that fit that particular category for me:
Little Topiary Fir Tree ($15)
by Kaleda
I mean, who really needs a decorative topiary? I do now. Before I saw this I never thought "Hmm, a little scented topiary would be just right in my kitchen." Now I want all three.
Salt and Pepper Shakers ($38)
from Midwest Finds
I'm pretty sure the salt and pepper shakers on my stove just broke and I have to replace them right away. Thank goodness I found these. Where would I be without Etsy?
Tissue Pom ($5)
by Sweet Poms
I don't really have guests at my home, it's just not that kind of home. But now I suddenly want to dangle a bunch of these from my ceiling, buy a proper couch and have a party. What the heck?
Sugar Creme Emulsifying Scrub ($10)
by Haus of Gloi
Dude, I don't even know what "emulsifying" is, but this looks like the seller is suggesting I bathe myself in a coffee based treat and I am totally on board. Want. Might eat.

Dude.
OK, it seems I'm back up and running with a decent connection at work so I can get back to some regular posting. (Huzzah!). So here's a late edition of this weeks feed reading. I hope you enjoy!
- I love looking at other people's creative spaces. They inspire me to reorganize (which is a rare and splendid thing) and usually give me a great idea or two. The people at Blanket Mag clearly feel the same way because they're asking us to shoot our "Creative Spaces" and so they can feature them in their next issue! Oh, and they're also working on another great project about creativity and the time you were born. Check it! via: Blanket Magazine

I wish I had room enough to share with you every awesome thing I've found. Here's some highlights from the Arts folder of my feed reader this week:

It's that time of year again...time for Layer Tennis! I wrote a post last year on what it's all about so check that out. In short though, it's a 10 round live competition between two artists swapping layers and making something new every time. In the past it's focused mostly on design, but this year there's typography and photography manipulation as well.
Check out the beginning and end of the last match where two typographers duked it out:

This week, a match after my own heart where two photographers (Sam Javanrouh of Toronto and Naz Hamid of San Fransisco) "shoot and upload a live dialogue of photos from their respective cities." There's also commentary that follows the competition from a neutral party, however this time Mark Greenberg of Mayfair Recordings will be composing a score to go along.
Amazing.
Get going! The match has begun! And be sure to keep checking back for future bouts.

I find myself so overwhelmed with the day to day sometimes that when I actually sit down to create (when I make the time...which I must make more of as well), I'm totally blocked. Or even worse, totally indecisive.
Thankfully the web has become an incredible source for inspiration. A couple of clicks and I have a new idea or two. (The key is not to get too distracted of course.)
There are probably thousands of resources on the web about how to battle a creative block so I'm gonna go ahead an make a little list for you. Now you can skip the Googling and get to the creating.
You're welcome.

Bullard countered with a Renoir saying: "Max Anderson must not really believe the Colts can beat the Saints in the Super Bowl. Let's up the ante.
