It's all over...

Onstage (by RGP)

To those of you who are new around here, I am a theater technician.  That's what I do to pay the bills.  Plus, it's just a really fantastic job.

That means I work backstage in theaters.  Not movie theaters, Broadway and Off-Broadway theaters. Part of my job is seeing people come and go. Shows open and close. Audiences love and hate.  Reviews break hearts and make careers.  Sets go up and get torn down.

I've been doing it for 10+ years and with time I've become very well acquainted with hellos and goodbyes.  That's just how it is. We, us theater-folk, have to be able to adapt pretty quickly. You'll never catch me shed a tear when another play closes.

But this time was a little different. The production was incredible and everyone was so proud of the work we did.  During our final curtain call, I actually felt a pang of emotion.  Weird.

So as I completely switch gears into a month of working on my photos, etc until the next show, I realize something else has switched.  For the last few years I've been really worn out with theater.  That's par for the course, everyone gets tired of what they do at some point.  However, coming off such a remarkable production as this one has reminded me why I started theater in the first place.

We form miniature and temporary families all in the name of art.  We work insane hours, actors pour out their emotions, technicians make sure everything is exactly the same every night, producers push, playwrights re-write and directors suffer sleepless nights until the show is a lock.  Then suddenly, it's all over.

Just like that.

We're a special bunch of people, and I'm proud to be a part.

Powder Blue (by RGP)

Spring is here and I'm going to spend this remarkably beautiful day indoors.  And by indoors I mean inside a windowless theater with the lights out.  Y'know, because I work backstage and it's dark back there.

So do me a favor today, wouldja?  Assuming the weather is nice where you are...go out for a walk. Soak it in.  Maybe take a few photos even!  And remember there are hundreds of us stuck inside dark, windowless theaters today in NYC (and other far off lands where they have theater too).

This has been a public service announcement for actors and technicians everywhere on this first day of spring.

(( Truth be told, I'll probably get an hour outside between shows, so it's not all bad. ))

Early to rise...

Sunrise (by RGP)

Maybe I was just excited because today is my first day off for a couple weeks, but for some reason I woke up at the crack of dawn this morning.  This shot was taken out my window as the sun began to rise.

First Tree I Shot (by RGP)The First Tree I Ever Shot (by RGP)

The first shot you see on the left was taken in the mid 90's for a High School photography class.  I'm pretty sure our assignment was to study contrast.  I remember having no clue what the heck contrast was, I just wanted to take pictures.

The second shot was taken just a few days ago on Christmas day while we were up for a visit at my parents house.  It's the same tree from a slightly different angle.  There's nothing really magnificent about this photo except it's the first tree I ever shot about 15 years later.  Not a whole lot has changed.  I'm glad.

Do you have any old photos you can re-shoot from a present day perspective?  Let me see 'em!

Blizzard

First Snow

We had our first snow storm of the season!  This shot was taken on the corner of 41st and 8th. That's the New York Times building.   The snow over those lights was actually swirling around like little tornadoes. It was quite a sight!

Gripe it out

Autumn Princess (by RGP)

If it weren't for the little moments like the one pictured above, I'm not sure how I would make it sometimes.

Yeah, that's right.  I feel like griping today.

Life's not so pleasant distractions are getting me down.  Sick cats, financial issues, surrounded by a general lack of motivation and some other things I can't mention here in a public forum.  You know how it goes.  People pissing other people off, etc.

What's bumming me out the most, and perhaps this is a girl thing, is that when a problem arises, the rest of that day is inevitably shot to hell. I know I'm behind on blogging, photos, etc and I actually woke up pretty stoked to get some of that done...until the cat made a sound, which snowballed into an issue and avalanched it's way into 'gee what are all the other problems in my life?"

It's a bitch trying to be creative when all your brain really wants to do is dwell.

Dwell, dwell, dwell.

And of course, half the problems aren't mine directly...they just effect me...directly.  Which I guess makes them my problems.

Unless I pack up and run away to Fiji or something.

What's Fiji like this time of year?

Listen, this is hard for me, this whole getting it off my chest thing.  I'm totally one of those people who says "everyone's got problems so suck it up."  But today I just can't find a straw.

So instead I say, "Suck it."

A new month...

After the Storm (by RGP)

As I recently explained, September straight up sucked.  Ok, well I didn't really explain it all that well, but you can trust me on that.  Maybe one day I'll give you all the details, but the bottom line is...October simply must RULE!

So far I'm off to a pretty good start.  The weather has been amazing, we went out to a movie this weekend (Zombieland!), I've cooked some chili and the new roommate is working out very well. All super great, relaxing things.

However, I've been completely bored with my photos lately.  I know I'll get over it, but I want to get over it like...right now!  I feel like September has left a fog in my brain and it just won't clear.

Hey, in other pretty good news, my photoblog is really shaping up nicely!  Give it a look!

It's messy

Another One Gone (by RGP)

First show of the season is done!  We closed yesterday and I'm praying that the time off and a new month will help get my brain back in gear.  I mean seriously, you see that mess up there?  That's about where my sanity is these days.

September was filled with ups and a whole lot of downs.  Really no middle ground or normalcy to speak of.  Just days where I was able to set things aside and act like a human being for a few hours.

October is already starting off more interesting with a new roomate moving into our place.  The rent was getting too high with the lack of work, so we had to bite the bullet.  I'm terrible when it comes to change like this, but it's also so necessary that I'm the one who's gonna have to deal with it and just...let it go.

As long as no one labels their food...I think I should be ok.

Life Gets in the Way

Caught

It's been a little crazy around here.  Had to take one of our cats to the vet yesterday and it turns out he's got a terrible infection in his mouth. So the fella and I have been trying to come up with interesting ways to make him eat/drink again while stressing out over our financial situation due to said and impending vet visits.

Meanwhile I'm also taking on several new projects, one of which I will tell you about tomorrow (can't wait!) and the rest are basically just me trying to conquer my priorities.  Or rather, trying to figure out what my priorities are.

I feel like I've hit a fork in the road and that fork has at least 20 tines.

So what if I just wanted to write tines.  It's still true.

Be back shortly with our regularly scheduled program: Etsy Wednesday.

p.s. I have been (so far) successful with the photo a day project for nearly 2 weeks...check it out!

Work Light (by RGP)

This is our work light. The life of a theater technician is a dark and quiet one.  We wear all black, walk softly, whisper and read by flashlight. What we wouldn't give for invisibility cloaks.

In my case, I'm actually kind of a troll.  I sit directly under the stage (the trap room) and run the automation.  Maybe it's more like wizard of oz...but troll is funnier and that way I can call the stagehands (like my buddy Carl) gremlins.

Actually, maybe I prefer flying monkeys.

Next Door (by RGP)

The weather has been extraordinary.  I'm talking...perfection.  Today was my day off so the fella and I lazed about on the stoop around sunset and watched the comings and goings of our little court street.

For the most part, it's really quiet.  Just a few loud gatherings every now and then.  I suppose it's about as peaceful as you can get on a Brooklyn street...so for today, I'm not complaining.

Today's photo was (surprise!) taken from my stoop.  I loooove the apartment building at the end of our street (pictured).  There's something both beautiful and ominous about it, don't you think?

Jake (by RGP)That's it...I've had enough!  I'm sick of creative block  and laziness getting me down.  I'm tired of waiting for motivation to strike.  Done with envying other bloggers.

No more, "I could write that....tomorrow."

Sure sure, it's always been my intention to share the arts here...but where the heck did the 'dafts' go?  Has my daily life really become this....blah?

I can't even remember the last time I clicked the "Daft" category when saving a post.

I think it's time I made a pact to write something a little more personal every day.  After all, that's how this all began.  I wanted to feature art while also sharing my own personal voyage into the unknown.  My flaws and victories, my ups and downs...my sane and crazy crazy crazy.

So...as of today, I'm raising my fist at creative block!  It will come but I will conquer with motivation!

Y'know, as long as I feel like it. Maybe I'll just go back to bed.

Looking back on old photos, found this great one of the fella.  He's coming home soon!

Also...it's hot outside and I can't think straight.  This shot reminds me of the chilly winter which sounds fantastic at the moment.

That is all.
