Tickle Fight

It's no big surprise that things like blogging fall by the wayside in the summertime. We're all so busy living and enjoying life that there's hardly anytime to write about it, nevermind actually reading.  I remind myself that this is not a bad thing, but also realize I could be more forthcoming about my daily antics and general tom-foolery.

I've spent a LOT of time with my family this summer.  And by family I mean those two no-goodniks up there.  That'd be my cousin on the left and brother on the right having a tickle fight on a picnic bench in the park.  What better place for a tickle fight?

Sadly I haven't been very good at documenting everything.  I made a commitment to change that last weekend, so do keep your eyes peeled for more.  On second thought, that's gross. Don't peel your eyes.  Just keep stopping by.

I had a conversation last night with some friends about photography and how important the equipment is.  I used this shot I took with my new phone (Droid) to backup my argument that it's got nothing to do with the stuff you've got.

Even I can't believe I took this with a phone. I'm not saying it's some award winning shot, but you have to admit it's pretty decent for something that makes phone calls, texts and updates your Facebook status too, right?

So what do you think?  Is it the photographer that makes the photograph or is it the camera?   Can anyone be a photographer now in the digital age or does it still take a certain amount of finesse and creative skill to get the right shots?

Mermaid Parade

Mermaid Parade (by RGP)

Saturday was my 32nd birthday and the Mermaid Parade down at Coney Island.  I haven't had my birthday off from work in years and I've never had the opportunity to go to the parade.  As luck would have it, I got both this year.

It was amazing. We showed up a little late and I figured I'd be doomed to stand 6 people back from the barricade, making my birthday wish an impossibility which was to make the king and queen, Laurie Anderson and Lou Reed, acknowledge my presence for just one second.

But I'm me and I'm resourceful.  I simply pushed my way to the front of the crowd, mumbled that it was my birthday, wielded my camera like I was a pro and made my way into the street with the rest of the press.

I was out there just in time to chase Laurie and Lou's little cart and yell "Laurie I love you! It's my birthday!" and somehow snag this shot right as she looked at me. She totes blew me a kiss too.

It's ok, you can be a little jealous.

The rest of the night was spent drinking and rabble-rousing with a great group of friends.  It's the best birthday I've had in years.

Oh, and see the rest of my Mermaid Parade shots on Flickr.  More to come so keep checking back!

Tom foolery.

Scandalous (by RGP)

For the last, oh I don't know... 3 years? Maybe more?  I've pretty much been a sort of shut in.  I'm responsible, I work all day on my photography, try desperately to catch up with my writing, go to my day job, watch tv at night and basically don't do much of anything else.

Then about 2 weeks ago, it felt like the summer weather flipped that random switch that never turned anything on and suddenly there's a light glowing out on the porch.  I've been a little irresponsible, stayed out too late a handful of times and generally been up to "no good."

Why it's not good to have this much fun, I'll never know.

It could be a phase. It could also be a major life change. Either way,  I haven't been this content and happily exhausted in a long time.  I tell myself it's okay to slack off a little because I'm searching for some crazy inspiration.

Of course, that other side of my brain is starting to nag.  I have to start mixing the priorities in with the tom foolery. A healthy balance is needed or I'm going to torment myself into misery.

So, fellow artists, creators, writers and no-goodniks, how do you do it?  How do you force yourself to sit down and create when you've got the itch to go out and play?  And as artists, should we even resist that urge or is it actually more productive to get out and do it, making room for new inspiration?

And what's the meaning of life anyway?

Hard at work....

Scandalous (by RGP)

I've been inspired to think outside the box I've built for myself lately and it's kept me very very busy.  This photo you see (and others) are part of a new series ("Scandalous") I'm working on that is definitely outside my normal boundaries.  They're a touch racy and not really safe for work, so y'know, don't open the link around your boss.

There's a bunch more to come.  I do hope you enjoy.

It's a very drab and dreary Wednesday here in NYC so I thought I'd simply try and lighten the mood with some beautiful photography featuring bokeh found on Etsy.  We could all use a new print on the wall, right?

For those of you who don't know, bokeh is derived from the Japanese word "boke", meaning 'blur.' In photography it refers to "the creative use of lens blur as a composition."  Enjoy.

After an extremely long week, I'm pleased to finally find the time to dive into some serious inspiration and give myself a break. I hope these little features can do the same for you!  What did you find in your feed reader this week?

  • Everything.  That's what this and 6 other videos are about.  An awesome collection of short works by more than a handful of talented artists.  Go here to find the rest.  via: Change the Thought

Man do I hope I run into one of these photo shoots one day.  Dancers Among Us is a collection of photos featuring dancers of the Paul Taylor and Martha Graham Dance doing their thing around NYC.  Amazingly, the website says no trampolines or other devices were used to create these moments.

Amazing.

2000 years and older. Can you even fathom such a thing? Rachel Sussman can and has photographed nearly 25 living organisms that age, including half a million year old bacteria.

The "Oldest Living Things in the World" project is one of my personal favorites.  Sussman has been traveling the globe and working with biologists in search of these oldest living things for 5 years now.

She needs our help to finish the job.The biggest trips she has to take in order to complete her goal include the Antarctic Peninsula for 5,000 year old moss, Tasmania for 43,000 year old shrubs and scuba diving in Spain for 100,000 year old sea grass.

Of course, this can get pretty pricey which is where her Kick Starter comes in.

The goal is set at $10,000 and will cover travel expenses, film and gear.  Depending on how much you pledge, you can receive proofs of the photographs, thank-yous on her website, invitations to a party in her studio and more.

This is seriously one of the coolest projects I've come across and to me, this is exactly what Kick Starter is all about.  It would be a tragedy if she wasn't able to finish, being so close to the end of her adventure.  Help out if you can by pledging or spreading the word!

Sometimes there's just nothing as stunning as a simple scene carefully composed (look at all those excellent lines!) and intensified with just the right light. These are the kind of photos that make me wonder, "Would I have seen that?"  I'm glad I do now.

I love to pore over photographs on Flickr and blogs. I could look at them all day long, and every day I find a handful that just make me stop and stare.

There's something truly stunning about this very simple photograph.  The "old soul" in this little girl's eyes mixed with the silly noodle (is that a noodle?) hanging from her mouth.  What a cool contrast.

OK, I've been quiet long enough.  Still working on the redesign but if I don't get some blogging time in, the guilt will overwhelm me.  I hate that I missed last week's dip into the arts folder of my feed reader so we're gonna have some inspiration today.  What day needs inspiration more than Monday anyhow?

  • 3D is in.  It's like, so in.  However, I was really surprised to find this chunk of images on Inspire Yourself, stereoscopic images to be exact, because I was completely unaware of this technique until now.  You bet your ass I can't wait to try my hand at it. via: 72dpi

Take a moment...

Under the Bridge (by RGP)

Working very very hard on the redesign of Arts & Dafts, hence the quiet time around here.  It's very strange to be on yet totally off the grid.  I've been here in front of my computer but didn't check my Twitter for about 48 hours.  Didn't work on a single photo until this morning (see above).  And of course, I haven't blogged... which I actually felt very guilty about (which is strange considering I was actually working on the blog).

Anyhow, I'm going to take a moment to do so now.  Prepare yourself for a little train of thought.

It's interesting to me how very important blogging has become in my life.  The idea that I have the ability to concentrate on all the things I love so much in life and share them here is still amazing to me. After years and years of blogging (though A&D has only been around for 2 now) I've never grown tired of it.

I wish I could say that about everything else in life.  But that's kinda why I started A&D in the first place.  My focus has always been creativity and the arts, but within that I'm all over the damn place.  Did you know I can knit? And I did so feverishly for a few years.  Now I just have a giant stash of yarn sitting in the corner.

Then sometimes I play with beads, but that never lasts long.   I tried to learn to play the drums for a minute.  It went well, until something else caught my fancy.  Might have been the knitting.  Then I'll spend months filling up sketchbooks with doodles until I decide I want to be a bookworm, or an avid gamer.

I've always been terrible at favorites too.  I can't single out a favorite song, book, color or movie.  Ask me today and I'll tell you one thing, ask me tomorrow and it'll be completely different.

I used to think that made me flighty and I've always been jealous of people like my brother who know exactly what they want to be (musician in his case).  What I realize now, after I've actually stuck to two solid things in my life (Arts & Dafts and photography) is that I'm just wild about all the possibilities there are out there.  Who knows, maybe tomorrow I could be a glass blower or a potter or a cop!

Ok, I won't ever be a cop, but I know a few and I love to hear their stories.  Does that count?

So yeah, I'm proud to be a Jane of all trades, master of many.

P.S. Keep your eye out for the redesign in the next few weeks! Oh boy!
