Nakata
"Nakata"
art by and property of Jeannie Lynn Paske

It's the last week of January's theme "Visual Art".  I'm so glad I was able to feature some of the amazing artists over on Etsy, especially right now when we're all a little broke and could use some affordable pick-me-ups to make our days a little brighter.

Par for the course, the works in the Obsolete World shop are not only unique and beautiful, but easy on the pockets (unless you're going for an original of course).  Jeannie Lynn offers up her art in many shapes and sizes like 8x10 prints, 5x7 prints, limited edition prints, originals and even notecards.  Prices range anywhere from $5 - $500 so you're bound to find something to suit both your financial and creative needs.

Enough about money already.  The piece above is only one of many that caught my eye.  I had the hardest time figuring out which one to feature and in the end I chose "Nakata" because I think it shows off  this artist's diversity.  She certainly has a very specific style and feel to her work, but the moods range from a little scary to sad to relaxed and so on with each piece.  To me, "Nakata" can be interpreted in a number of ways.

The original was done in watercolor, charcoal, pastel and ink and the 5x10 print is on archival professional quality premium luster paper with archival inks. That means high quality and a long life span for your purchase.  The artist also left a small white border for easy framing.  Oh, and they're all signed!

I insist you check out the rest of the shop. It's definitely another case of "something for everyone".

As a new edition to Etsy Wednesday, I'd like to encourage you to let the artists know how much you like their stuff, even if you can't buy it today.

as usual, if you have an Etsy find that you think should be feature or are an Etsy shop owner that wants to submit their shop for an "Etsy Wednesady", please email me at oda[@]daftcrafts[dot]com

PodNesting Instincts
photographs property of J2Jewelry

Honestly, when I saw this weeks Etsy find my first thought was "Holy crap!"  I wanted to share a photo of every piece in the J2Jewerlry shop, but I figured I'd save some for you to go check out yourself.

The "Pod" on the left is the first piece I saw.  Made of silver and freshwater pearls, and as the creator says, "It's classic, subtle, and tailored to work beautifully for several occasions."  Also, it's customizable.  You can have up to 5 pearls! (Just give them some extra time to make the order).  Would you believe it's only $48?

The necklace on the right, "Nesting Instincts", is the second piece that caught my eye as I scanned the amazing shop.  The shop owner says, "It just wants a good home and to provide you with inspiration." You know how I love inspiration.  It's features "3 speckled eggs" inside a nest of antique brass wire and it's only....$30!.  As with the "Pod", each one is made to order and totally unique!

Don't stop at these two though, you have to see the rest.  Check out this customizable guitar pick pendant, this adorable felted acorn pendant, the funny "Master of Disguise" mustache necklace (check out how you can wear it!) and this beautiful Honeycomb pendant.  It doesn't stop there so be sure to view the shop!

So, what's your favorite piece?

Hope BirdcageHope Birdcage Worn

Today I thought it only appropriate to do a "black Friday sale" search on Etsy and this shop was one of the first to pop up.  We all know it's one of those years when unique, handmade and cheap are a must for most of us during the holidays and though this shop might not have the cheapest stuff in the world, one of Below 14th's amazing handmade pendants would be present enough for me.

I had a hard time picking one to feature, I truly love everything in the shop, but when I saw this birdcage and then saw how big it actually is (photo on the right), I fell instantly in love.  It's made entirely by hand out of 20 gauge silver wire with a "delicate copper heart" hanging in the middle.  All that work for only $76 sounds like a bargain to me.

Oh, and it comes with the chain.

Everything at the Below 14th shop is handmade.  Including this awesome and truly unique Hangman pendant made out of sterling silver, this Classic Tattoo pendant, this beautiful silver cuff, a Dali inspired pendant and way more.

Oh, and like I said, it's all on sale for Black Friday so go snatch 'em up fast!  Prices vary in the shop, so chances are you'll find something that suits your budget.

Bird Feeder
I swear I was looking for something affordable for everyone this week but when these incredible bird feeders caught my eye, I knew I had to highlight them.  I've just never seen anything like 'em before.  Pricey? Well at $475, I'd say yes.  Unique?  Incredibly!

Each piece is hand crafted and welded with steel and copper.  This particular piece stands 6' tall and has a sturdy base you can bury 8-10 inches in the ground.  Click the photo for the listing and there you can see more shots of this fascinating creation.

The work in this small Etsy shop ranges from the simple to the intricate and bizarre.  Also available is this gorgeous candelabra made of steel and glass.  It's sturdy enough to withstand being outdoors but pretty enough to have a place in your living room.  It also measures around 6' tall.

The creator, Joseph Papendick, has a website as well where you can find more information on materials, his shows and more.

Even if you can't afford one of these bad boys, they're absolutely worth a look.

The PickMe CuffI'm kind of a freak for oversized cuffs and when I saw this one, I had to have it.  I don't play the guitar...well, I can but I don't and I only know a few diddies...but I still love the idea of walking around with a guitar pick hidden on my wrist.

This cuff was made from an upcycled leather belt, adorned with musical notes and a handsewn leather pocket. Two snaps provide secure closure. A standard guitar pick is included to make this a perfect and complete gift for the guitar player in your life!!

There are a ton of gorgeous leather cuffs (I love the shape on this one) and other accessories at the Blest Beads and Leather shop on Etsy.  All of this shop owners goods are very affordable too.  None of the leather cuffs are currently over $25.

Pearl VisionThe Hypnotist

I originally found Maid of Clay when I spotted this incredible vase.
Unfortunately it's been put on hold so I peeked around the rest of the shop and found these amazingly unique pendants. The face is made from porcelain clay that has been "lightly glazed with underglazes for an antique-y look and kiln fired to 2167 degrees."  They've also been signed on the back.

The pendant on the left features vintage shirt studs that have a brown mother of pearl in the center of a gold frame. On the right has vintage watch gears. The chain measures approximately 19" long (she does offer to make different lengths) and is 14k gold filled.  The toggle clasp is plated metal.

There are currently 29 different face pendants in Felicia's shop so you're bound to find one just right for you.  There are also a number of other items including charms, sculptures, vases and more.

At around $32 a piece, these seem like a real steal to me.  I will definitely snag one for myself.  I have my eye on The Hypnotist personally (the one on the right).

Beetle Insectus Ring by edmdesigns

It's safe to say my jaw just about hit the floor when I saw this extremely detailed ring by edmdesigns.  It doesn't stop their either, there are 43 rings currently available in the shop.  Also Steampunk inspired cufflinks, necklaces, earrings, bracelets and more.  The attention to detail is astonishing.

I'd love to see what this actually looks like on a hand.  Definitely not for the jewelry shy as it measure 1.5" in height.  Yowzers!

"This is a fabulous Steampunk ring is designed using a beetle insect blank form to which a 17 jewel vintage Swiss watch movements has been mounted. Great detail and even greater conversation piece. Awesome UNISEX design."

This particular ring costs $65 and overall prices in the shop range from around $35 - $100.  I'd also like to point out that a lot of this shop owner's work is gallery worthy, having appeared on display across the states and in New York City (where the designer, Ricky, is based).

This week's find has me drooling.  I'm not a big jewelry wearer but I am a sucker for something unique and the Etsy shop Helbent has it!

This piece originally caught my eye, making me wonder if it was some kind of body jewelry.  Turns out the creator has chosen a very interesting way to wear her pendants that make it seem as if they're free floating above your neckline.  At 10 bucks, don't expect this one to be around long, I might just swoop it up for myself.

When I browsed the new store to see what else she had, I found that incredible bracelet up there.  I don't know if it's been done before but I do know I have never seen anything like it and I love the concept.  Also love the photo!  It's made of sterling silver and formed in the shape of a hand.

"In order for a more custom fit, this bracelet can be made in the shape of your hand by faxing or scanning in a tracing of your hand."

Heart's Voice

Make sure to go check out the rest of the shop for some really unique finds. Some are made of silver as mentioned above while others of galvanized steel. Oh and you could be her first customer!  Prices range from $10-$60.

Tree On Purple Pendant Bird On A Wire Tree on Pink Crazy Daisy Orange Daydream Peeking Green Flower White Tree Red Bird on Branch Mod Tree on Blue Pray for Sun Blue Daydream Pink Birdie
Last week I asked you to send me some of your Etsy finds and one reader, Elisa of Unlikely Housewife, introduced me to these fantastic pendants from Madison Craft Studio!  The moment I saw them, I knew they were perfect.

In fact, there are so many great pendants, I couldn't decide which one I wanted to highlight, so I made a little collage.  It's an image map so mouse over the ones you love and click to get to their pages.

With 187 items in the shop and nearly 10,000 sold, I'd say it's a pretty safe bet that you're going to find one just right for you.

Each pendant is made of origami or similar paper and then decoupaged onto a 1/8 inch piece of masonite.  Most of the square pieces measure 1.25 x1.25 inches.  The rectangular pendants are 3/4 x 2 inches.

I wear a lot of black for my job (and just in general) and I can't help but swoon over the idea of adding a little color with one of these gorgeous and unique pendants.  The prices range from $4.50 to $7.00 and at the price so I might just have to get a handful!

Cerberus Forge

If you've seen my Etsy Wednesdays before, you know I search for the most unique items I can find every week.  However, this time I had a new goal and that was to represent Brooklyn.  Lucky me, I found this fantastic set of vases in a brand new shop, Cerberus Forge.

Hand crafted out of nickle and silver, these are truly one of a kind.  The shop owner writes:

"These vases and sculptures have been hand crafted from a combination of custom-made and found metals from New York City. While some appear similar, no two are the same.  They explore the conflict between man and nature by merging these man made forms and your arrangements into new collaborative creations."

These are not only beautiful hand crafted creations, but as a cat owner, I now have dreams of actually putting a vase on my desk.  I know, sometimes it's the simpler things.

So go check it out!  As I said, it's a new shop so there's bound to be some interesting stuff popping up in the future!

I knew the very moment I saw this teapot that I just had to share it with everyone.  I'm not a big tea drinker but without a doubt, if I had the cashola for this right now, I wouldn't hesitate to buy it.  I've genuinely never seen a teapot quite like this one or any of the others in Larry Watson's shop.

Larry has been working as a ceramic artist for 18 years and says on his profile, " I put the funky in functional." I couldn't agree more.  This one not funky enough for you?  I insist you check out his incredibly unique face series where he molds faces into the side of his work.

This pot, as well as the others, is made of the "strongest porcelain" and it's microwave and dishwasher safe.  The one pictured here can hold over 3 cups.

You can also view entire collections of his work on his website WatsonClay.com.

Etsy Wednesday

Great Gherkin

As you might have gathered already, my favorite part of Etsy searching is finding something totally different and a little outside the box.  Imagine my excitement and surprise when I found this!

First let me explain that the gherkin is a treasured pickle in my family.  You see, there is an old tradition on Christmas day.  Someone hides a gherkin on the tree and before anyone opens any presents, there is a gherkin hunt!  The rules vary from this point.  Some reward the winner with a special gherkin gift and some winners simply get to open the first present of the day.  You can make up your own rules really...just so long as there's a gherkin on the tree!

Also, say gherkin a few times and try not to crack a smile.

This "Great Gherkin" clay ornament was created by A Little Character on Etsy. Their shop is filled with some fantastic and truly unique items.  Ever wanted a zombie magnet? Well now you know where to go!
